Blueprint

Product Blueprint · 4–8 Weeks

4–8 weeks
Overview

Define exactly what to build—before you build it.

The Blueprint is a comprehensive 4–8 week engagement that produces everything you need to confidently start engineering: user research, technical architecture, UX wireframes and user flows, a phased roadmap with milestones, and a budget framework. It is the bridge between knowing what the opportunity is and being ready to build it.

Our product, design, and engineering leads collaborate to produce a plan detailed enough to estimate, staff, and execute—with no ambiguity about scope, technology choices, or expected outcomes. The Blueprint eliminates the most expensive risk in software development: building the wrong thing. By investing in thorough upfront planning, you avoid costly mid-build pivots, scope creep, and missed requirements.

The Blueprint is designed to be vendor-agnostic. You can hand it to your internal engineering team, bring it to another development partner, or continue with Digital Scientists for a rapid prototype or full production build. The plan is yours. Many clients pair the Blueprint with a Diagnostic to first identify the right opportunity, then define how to build it.

What You Get

Five deliverables. A complete product plan.

Everything an engineering team needs to start building with confidence—no gaps, no ambiguity.

Product Requirements Document

Comprehensive specification of features, user stories, acceptance criteria, and edge cases. Detailed enough to estimate with confidence and build without ambiguity.

Technical Architecture Diagram

System architecture, data models, API design, integration points, infrastructure requirements, and technology stack recommendations. All decisions documented with rationale.

UX Wireframes & User Flows

Wireframed screens for every major user flow, annotated with interaction patterns and design rationale. Validated through user research and stakeholder review.

Phased Roadmap with Milestones

A sequenced build plan broken into phases with clear milestones, dependencies, and decision points. Shows what to build first, what to defer, and why.

Budget Framework

Cost estimates by phase, team composition recommendations, and ongoing operational cost projections. Gives your finance team the numbers they need for approval.

How It Works

Four phases. Eight weeks. A complete plan.

Each phase builds on the last, with regular checkpoints so you are never surprised by the direction.

1-2

Research & Discovery

Weeks 1–2

User interviews, stakeholder workshops, competitive analysis, and technical landscape assessment. Build the foundation of understanding that every design decision rests on.

3-4

Architecture & Design

Weeks 3–4

Define the system architecture, data models, and integration approach. Wireframe key user flows. Validate design direction with stakeholder review sessions.

5-6

Roadmap & Planning

Weeks 5–6

Sequence the build into phases. Define milestones, dependencies, and decision points. Develop the budget framework with cost estimates for each phase.

7-8

Review & Refinement

Weeks 7–8

Final stakeholder review, incorporate feedback, refine estimates. Deliver the complete Blueprint package ready to hand to any engineering team.

Who It's For

This is right for you if…

The Blueprint is designed for organizations that need a complete, defensible plan before committing to a production build.

You need a complete plan before committing to a build

Your organization requires detailed specifications, architecture decisions, and cost estimates before approving a production budget. The Blueprint provides the comprehensive documentation that procurement, finance, and technical teams need to say yes.

You're evaluating build vs. buy

You are comparing custom development against off-the-shelf solutions. The Blueprint gives you a concrete custom option—with real architecture, real cost estimates, and a real timeline—so you can make an apples-to-apples comparison.

You want to bring the plan to your own team or another vendor

The Blueprint is designed to be vendor-agnostic. You can hand it to your internal engineering team, use it to evaluate other development partners, or continue with Digital Scientists. The plan belongs to you—100% IP ownership.

Ready to define what to build?

30 minutes. No pitch. We'll help you determine if a Blueprint is the right starting point—or recommend a Diagnostic to identify the opportunity first, or The Experiment to validate feasibility before planning.
